You ask, I answer.

What’s the difference between Comprehensive & Collision on my auto insurance?

Comprehensive & Collision are separate physical damage coverages that help pay to get your vehicle fixed or repaired, subject to a deductible.

If you are leasing or financing a vehicle, dealerships and/or banks usually require you to have both coverages active.  If you own your vehicle outright, you can choose to have both, one or the other, or no comp and collision coverage at all.

Depending on your financial situation, it may not make sense to have both comp & collision on an older vehicle.

Collision Coverage

Collision covers physical damage sustained in an accident with another vehicle or object, like a fence or a telephone pole.  If you get into an accident with another car, you can submit a claim through your insurer to have your vehicle fixed.

Your out of pocket expense would be your deductible, usually $500-$1000. Examples of Collision claims are usually damage from accidents involving other vehicles.

Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive (or Comp or sometimes called Other than Collision) covers physical damage to your vehicle caused by theft, attempted theft, hail, fire, wind, flood, vandalism, falling debris and also hitting an animal.  Comp coverage is also subject to your deductible.

Examples of common comp claims are damage resulting from a deer hitting your car, rocks cracking your windshield while driving or an object hitting your parked car in the driveway, like your basketball hoop or a tree limp.  And of course, your kids using the side of your car as a hockey net…

Always review your policies with your agent, is important to know what your policy includes and excludes coverage for, preferably, before you need to file a claim.
