You ask, I answer.

Does homeowners insurance cover squirrel damage in my attic?

In most cases, damage from insects, rodents, or birds is not covered by your standard homeowner’s policy.

This includes termites, rates, mice, squirrels, chipmunks or birds.

Usually squirrels enter your home through eaves, soffits, trim, or ridge caps. These damages are usually classified under ‘home maintenance’ and would fall solely on the homeowner to remedy out of pocket.

Let’s say a squirrel chews through your home’s electrical wiring and a fire starts. Your insurance may cover the damage since ‘fire’ is a covered peril under most policies.

However, some insurance companies may not honor the claim if they believe the owners of the home recognized there were squirrels existing in their attic and did nothing alleviate the problem.

So there you have it.
